The Police Perspective on Cultural Heritage Theft

Sophie Hayes of the Metropolitan Police’s Art and Antiques Unit will present The Police Perspective on Cultural heritage Theft.

Brazen thefts of museum exhibits often attract global media coverage, and the myth of the “art heist” is embedded in popular culture. However, heritage objects are usually stolen in far less dramatic circumstances, and the criminals behind these cases rarely bear any similarity to Raffles. Sophie Hayes, a detective from the Metropolitan Police’s Art and Antiques Unit, will discuss the many forms that cultural heritage theft can take and explore how these complex cases are solved using a number of case studies. The aim of this presentation is to raise awareness about this crime type, identify which heritage assets may be appealing to thieves, and propose actions that can be taken to assist the police investigations
